Fibercill produces a top-quality range of MDF primed mouldings including skirting, architrave, window board and door linings. Founded in 1982, the company has extensive headquarters in the West Midlands and has won an impressive 14 consecutive annual British Safety Council Health and Safety awards.
After bringing in environmental consultancy firm Mechon to complete a DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations) inspection, the company was advised that its existing dust extraction equipment was non-compliment. As Mechon had worked with Multi-Fan Systems on numerous projects beforehand, it was one of the companies invited to tender for the installation of a new extraction system.
Multi-Fan Systems Sales Manager Peter Hill explains: “We tendered for the project against three other companies. Mechon liked our design and the fact we could offer full site management of the project, from start to handover including health and safety management.”
The new system includes two large ATEX rated dust filters (with airflows of 22,600 m3/hr and 16,400m3/hr) which extract MDF dust from various wood-working machines, as well as fans, ductwork, control panels and site wiring. Fellow Absolent Group company Dustcheck was also involved in the project through the selection and supply of the dust extraction units.
Peter says: “The major obstacle with running the project from a safety point of view was that most of the installation had to be carried out during normal production. Fibercill operates large side loader forklifts which are very difficult to work alongside, so the Multi-Fan Systems team worked in conjunction with Fibercill’s manufacturing team to minimise disruption to both parties during the installation.
“The inside of the building previously held a large quantity of dust due to the design of the previous installation - the new extraction system has dramatically reduced the internal dust levels.
“Fibercill is part of the Masonite group which has many processing plants across the UK - we are currently involved in looking at a large centralised dust extraction system to support one of Fibercill’s sister plants, which involves full CDM site management, integrated systems capable of operating 24/7 with waste conveyance into silos and a sophisticated fire suppression system.”
