Oil Mist Extraction and Filtering

Multi Fan are the official UK design, advisory and installation partners of Scandfilter AB, suppliers of state of the art oil fumes, oil mist and emulsion mist filters for the machine tool industry.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION : Attention - Engineering Manager
Health & Safety - Oil mist and smoke - new HSE guidelines

A recent series of well publicised incidents within UK engineering companies has raised the profile of workshop coolant mist and the need to eliminate it. Facing employee actions and litigation - following concerns about potential lung diseases - manufacturing companies need to understand the risks, responsibilities and potential solutions to minimising these issues.
The ever increasing need to stay competitive has resulted in shorter cycle times by faster machine speeds, but consequently substantially more coolant mist.

Do you know if your employees are over exposed to excessive levels of metalworking fluid mist?

Health & Safety Issues
The air we breathe contains particles of many sizes:
100µm particles are caught in the nose (eg soot).
10µm particles are caught in the cilium of the respiratory tract (eg pollen).

Filters protect us from:
3µm particles – which are caught in the lungs (eg asbestos).
1µm particles and smaller – which go into the bloodstream (eg bacteria & viruses).

• ScandMist uses an H13 HEPA filter which is >99.9% Efficient at 0.2-0.3µm.
• HEPA filters are designed to remove all particles including bacteria.
• HEPA filters are used in Operating Theatres, Clean Rooms and Precision Assembly Areas.
– ScandMist incorporates final stage HEPA filtration to guarantee the high quality of air discharged into the workplace (usually cleaner than the surrounding air).

System Benefits
In addition to the obvious Health & Safety benefit of operator protection, installing Scandmist Filters will provide the following:

• Elimination of the frequent need to fit replacement HVAC filters (and clean ductwork).
• Elimination of a regular cleaning regime for oil mist filter units (typically every 3 months) - once in 3 years is normally sufficient for Scandmist Filters.
• A reduction in power consumption of approx 20%.
• A reduction in cleaning costs associated with electrical equipment, heat exchangers etc.
• Elimination of roof damage and fire hazards.

Retro-Fit Units
Where appropriate, retro fit can be more cost effective than new installation.
The picture (top left) is one of 16 existing coolant mist collectors after conversion to incorporate Scandmist internals. The internal filters were custom built to suit the existing housings – airflows ranging from 6,000 to 10,900 cu metes per hour.

The application was aluminium cylinder head machining (using emulsion as coolant) at a large Midlands based engine manufacturer. Following the success of a single test unit, all remaining units were modified.
